Glimpse the artist behind the art, with a talented creative in conversation about their methods, inspirations and challenges, and the philosophies and experiences that inform their work. Afterwards, enjoy an interactive session where guests can connect with each other and the artist while participating in a special workshop open to beginners and skilled creators alike.
Join local artist, Serial Beachcomber and BeachPatrol volunteer Colleen Hughson for a creative jewellery-making workshop that transforms marine debris into wearable art.
Using colourful beach plastics collected from local shorelines, you'll create your own unique assemblage earrings from an eclectic mix of materials including hard plastic fragments, fishing beads, and other unexpected treasures washed ashore.
No jewellery-making experience is required. This workshop is all about experimentation, creativity and having fun. There are no rules and no right or wrong way to make your earrings. Whether you prefer simple dangles, colourful layered pieces, hoop earrings or quirky sculptural creations, you'll be encouraged to follow your imagination and create something uniquely your own.
The evening begins with an informal chat about the stories hiding in these found materials – you'll learn a little about the marine debris collected along Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, where these plastics come from, and how creative reuse can give new life to materials that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Then things get hands on! Colleen will guide us through a playful and experimental workshop, with all participants leaving with up to five pairs of one-of-a-kind earrings made from plastic that once washed ashore as pollution.
Part talk, part play, part making mess - this event is about creativity, curiosity and reflection.
Shared pizzas and all tools and materials are provided, including jewellery wire, chain, pins, hooks, hoops and jump rings.
NB: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Kaz Clarke, the artist originally to be featured in this event, has had to withdraw.
